Shelby Sells' background is a mixture of her studies of psychology, sexuality, and the way she uses art to educate her Instagram followers.
Using collages and intimate interviews with friends, Shelby offers a judgement-free space where young people feel comfortable to ask questions and belong. She also produces her own lingerie and different acessories.
She's presented at numerous events, talking about how and why young adults should express their sexuality in a positive way. On 07.12, she'll head our workshop Pillow Talk at Galeria Melissa NY - exploring themes like love, sex, feminine empowerment, and modern relationships with our guests.

Why is it important to talk about sex?
It's important to talk about sex for a number of reasons, education and spreading awareness being significant ones. There is a lack of sexual education available to people unless they specifically search it out. Understanding our bodies, how they work, and how they can influence one other is a crucial aspect to growing an individual's sense of self and developing social responsibility. Sex and sexuality impact a lot of key elements in our daily lives. By opening up the dialogue around these topics, we are liberating them from sexual prowess and shame, and acknowledging the value, personal power, and freedom they possess.
This is actually one of the topics of the event, but for those that can’t go to NYC, could you give a few tips of how we can establish an open, friendly and relaxed conversation about sex, gender and sexual identity?
1. Choose a safe space. Creating a safe, comfortable, and judgement-free environment is a key element when talking about sensitive subjects.
2. Keep an open mind. Whatever personal preferences you might have may not be shared by whomever you're speaking with. Each person is unique and we should celebrate however they choose to identify. Being open to alternate lifestyles creates acceptance and can save lives.
3. Speak from your experience. It's not your place to tell people who to sleep with or how to identify. Discuss what you know and how you feel in a calm and healthy manner.
Which are the most significant positive changes in the way youth sees and deals with sexuality?
Today's youth are vulnerable and brave. I admire their willingness to fight for what they believe in. They are truly agents of change. Individuality has never been more celebrated. People of all ages are able to proudly come out and identify however they please. Today's youth isn't afraid to confront social issues, whether it be concerning race, sex, gender, or the political climate. They are in touch with their emotions and are actively trying to guide the world in a positive direction. These are very exciting times.
