Melissa + Sustainability
An extraordinary future can only come about through responsibility and attitude. It starts when we rethink and reprogram ourselves - paying close attention to the impact of our ideas and actions.
Are you in?
We've been putting more and more study, technology, and hands-on work on our production chain to ensure we're doing our absolute best.
Sustainable development is the balance between economic growth, social inclusion, and valuing local cultures. Combined, these aspects form a collection of positive practices that take us where we need to be.
It's about growing in unison to give our best to the planet and everyone on it.
Grendene is committed to sustainability. This is where Melissa's story begins.
Grendene's Sustainable Development Policy sets up a series of actions, some of which we've already undertaken and others that are upcoming proposals. They all follow the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global effort to build a better future.
Grendene supports all of these SDG initiatives:
3 - HEALTH AND WELLBEING
4 - QUALITY EDUCATION
5 - GENDER EQUALITY
6 - DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION
7 - AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
8 - DECENT WORK AND ECONOMY GROWTH
9 - INDUSTRY, INNOVATION, AND INFRASTRUCTURE
12 - RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

Grendene, how do we do it?
Moving forward with a clear destination in mind.
Grendene tackles sustainable development on three fronts: people, operations, and products.
Appreciation and respect for people begins with ethics – in the workplace and relationships. We have projects for health and well-being in addition to programs for valuing others and professional training.

When providing purpose and care to our local environment, the definitions of plastic need to be constantly updated.
We support the global fight against uncontrolled use of plastic - focusing on single-use plastics like straws, bags, and plastic bottles. The world cannot recycle all of this material, so it ends up becoming pollution.
However, this is not the case with Melissa. Our shoes are made to be reusable, and after you've worn out your Melissa shoes you can always trade with or donate to someone else. If you still need to get rid of them, they're made of 100% recyclable raw material and will become new products.
Sustainability is all about flow.
On October 15th - Conscious Consumption Day in Brazil - we cleaned out more than 300 of our stores, including Galeria Melissa New York and Galeria Melissa London. Marking the beginning of a shoe recycling project, Melissas that are no longer wearable are given a proper destination.
We're embracing this date to generate new information and build awareness about Melissa's sustainability. In addition to the installation of permanent collection bins in our stores, October 15th also invites everyone to learn about our journey in search of sustainability. We believe conscious consumption also means understanding the origin and destination of every product consumed.
Conscious consumption is rooted in considering both origins and destinations.

3 goals for our future
Responsible development is one of those types of projects that's always under construction. We have to be committed, consistent, and coherent.
To this end, we've made three main commitments
If you love it, you care for it. Help us complete and then restart a Melissa's lifecycle in the best way possible.
A, B, C
We understand plastic's potential, and we know it can be used for much more than just carrying water. So we want to open a dialogue about the possibilities and challenges of minimal impact, bringing forward the information and innovation for the future we want.
Always remembering that we are on the side of 100% reusable plastics.
The extraordinary future is plural
We live for connecting stories and people, while always respecting different expressions of identity. The positive impact also portrays diversity.
And around here, change is already underway.
